What's The Deal With Fasting?
I've been hearing a lot of recent onversations, wondering what benefits might come from not eating stuff? (Besides obvious weight loss.) The Old Testament has several cases where people used that to try and achieve various things. And in Matthew, Jesus talks about how the disciples could't work certain miracles without prayer and fasting. Well, prayer, talking with God, is super important. But can starving yourself actually help that? In case you wondered, I've done some research, so you don't have to. And this is bound to be a great subject for conversation. So put those tacos down, and let's get into it!
Firstly, I admit, I led you on a bit just there. But the purpose of fasting, at least when it comes to the Christian faith, was never about starving yourself. It might even be a way to recognize that God has provided for all your needs. But mainly, it's a way to get rid of distractions and focus on your heavenly Father.
See, we don't often worship little tiki style figures. If you do, we need to have a different conversation. But a lot of modern people, even Christian people, find their peace, their security, in material things. Pad locks, pickup trucks, guns, or just money. And in prosperous times and countries, we often look to food to make us happy, keep us aive, or do whatever we need. But if we think more about the stuff than God who gives it, stuff becomes an idol.
While it might not be food for you, there's probably something you have or do that's distracting you. And while it's important not to just give up a blessing forever, there are times when stepping away from candy, or coffee, or social media, can help you pay better attention to the Giver of all good things. Sometimes, you may even realize that you were far too interested in something. It's really just a great way to remind yourself about what and why you believe.
I hope that blessed you. If so, please consider buying me a cup of coffee, to keep me going.
