Still Waters
Most Christians know the 23rd Psalm. It's short, yet profound, and many have put it to music. Probably more people have memorized it. But the old saying was that familiarity breeds contempt. And while I doubt that this Psalm isn't loved, hearing it too often can dull the meaning. So today, I'm going to explore that meaning. I've done all the research, so you don't have to. But hopefully, this will bless you as much as me. So, sit tight, take a deep breath, and let's get into it! The Lord is my sheperd. Shepherds would take care of sheep. But more than just being poetic David was a shepherd. So he wrote what he knew, as he often had that task. Still, more than David, or any human, the Lord takes perfect care of our every need. I shall not want. This doesn't mean you won't desire anything ever again, or that christians shouldn't. I've talked about this elsewhere, but as the Psalms were written 2,000+ years ago, the wording is ancient. But some translations say, "I shall not be in want." Which is an old way of saying, you'll have every need provided for. He makes me lie down in green pastures. Back to shepherds for a moment. Their main goal was to "pasture" the sheep. This gave them food, waste facilities, a place to sleep. And it's where we get the word, pastor. But as the supreme head of every church, the Lord provides everything. He leads me beside still waters. Carrying on with that provided for theme, water is a major need. Sure, it keeps sheep alive, but it does so many other things. Bathing, agriculture, extinguishing. And in all those contexts, Christ is living water, to all who recieve. The Lord restoreth my soul. I won't get into what "soul" means. But the beauty of this is that, by providng for our physical needs, He also cares for us spiritually, allowing us rest and refreshing. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow death. Notice he didn't say "of death." Because this, in a way, is worse. It's that shadow, that gloom, of when somone you love has died, or you think you might. It's pure misery. He prepares a table before me, in the presence of my enemies. But the Lord doesn't leave! No, He keeps providing, laying out a feast. Right in front of your enemies. So that either they'll be intimdated, or you can share and make peace. Because He thinks of everything. He annoints my head with oil. This, I think, might be the best part. Once your enemies are taken care of, He welcomes you into the family. Annointed with oil, by the once and future King. We've not only been made clean, and recieved every need, here He's giving us everything. My cup runneth over. See? Grace is just so good, so abundant, that David can barely grasp the reality. He tried to hold out his goblet, gratefully, but God's goodness just keeps on coming. To you, and to me, for all eternity. And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Signs of the Times
In several scriptues, we find signs of end times. But in Luke 21, Jesus gives relevant pointers, that we can see happening now, not someday later. And I've researched a few of these, which means you don't have to. Still, if I've tickled your curiosity, let's get into it! At some point, every human accomplishment is gonna pass. Which is why we should focus instead on those things that will never fade. Or, more specifically, on the gifts of God, like grace, that stand for eternity. History has taught us that life is crazy. Some would say chaotic. And many try to offer wisdom and seek control. All the more reason to hold fast with He who offers everlasting truth and life. This is recorded in Matthew 29, but He also predicted wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes and famines. But while these are troubling, they're ever present. So instead of giving specific omens, Christ again intends that, in all situations and seadons, we should be ever mindful. Like that parable of the bridesmaids preparing lamps in Matthew 25, He gives us hope, and assurances that He's returning soon. But more than getting caught up in when exactly that might be, instead we're supposed to constantly ready and waiting. I hope that blessed you. The Other Side
This one is a bit of a personal reflection. But I thought it might still be interesting. See, a while back, Audrey Assad released a single called The Other Side. And it was sweet and romantic, but also uniquely hopeful because of a dogma it presented. One I've been pondering a while now. So I did some research, which means you won't have to. Though it might still be puzzling. But if you've got your thinking caps on, let's get into it! In the first verse, she talks about how new their love is, and the connection born of intimacy, but then explains her fear of finding and then losing this. Which leads to the chorus, talking about life's impermanence, but how she'll see him on the other side. Now, you might be remembering that Matthew 23 mentions the fact that in Heaven, they will neither give away or be given in marriage. But I don't believe that's what this is referring to. Rather, it assumes to understand the kindness of God. It's unlikely that He would allow people to be so closely bound, and then severed for the rest of eternity. Nothing about His mercy implies that kind of cruelty. Of course, this wouldn't hold true in every case. For example, if a spouse was physically or mentally abusive on earth, then the freedom of paradise would grant relief from that relationship. I'm only looking at couples who were blessed with the beauty of a loving marriage ,as it was intended. Obviously, there would be no coitus, but it wouldn't be missed in Heavenly bliss. But I imagine a joyful, platonic companionship. Better, actually thanan American Gothic dream, as every need is provided for, and people can simply enjoy each other's company. Needless to say, this is not exactly scripture. In some ways, scripture would seem to be going the other way. But there are many things that we believe, simply based on how it seems. Nothing talks about how we should meet every Sunday, and do church suppers and potlucks regularly. Or that the first Christmas was in December. But if we can agree on these things out of convenience, we can definitely agree that the same Lord who brings us together wouldn't force us to leave that completely. I think that's just silly. The Right Way to Fail
All of us have failure. Jesus said, "There is no one righteous." Some of us might fail more than others, or at least feel like we do. Wich is why, I researched some mindful methods, for facing failure, so you don't have to. And on theoff chance that topic resonates with you, let's get into it! One of the most important strategies is to just stay in church. And that might be a bit simplified, but even if you don't have a churchthat you enjoy, or you'd rather do something else like watching football, stay in touch with people of God who council and coach you. Whatever you might think, none of us can do this alone. Spiraling off that, recognize that each failure is a chance to learn, grow, and do better next time. Like in Luke 22, when Peter denies Christ, he hears the rooster, and he's never the same. The Bible is full of those stories. Moses messed up, as did Jonah and David, and many others. But God was still good to them, and He'll get you through too. And, having done that, you should lift it up in prayer. In the garden, Christ tells the disciples to pray, that they fall not to temptation. Of course, they did, but Christ gave them a second chance. That grace is the reason He came, and why many of us love Him. But remember, grace means a gift you don't deserve. So He's good, even in our failure. Which means we should, most all, trust Him. Why Good things Happen to Bad People
Yeah, I know. That feels like it’s backwards. Well,hopefully, I’ll flip it in part 2. But you probably wondered both at some point. Well, I’ve done some research so that you don't have to, and I hope it helps my readers out there. So if you're ready for good things to head your way, let's get into it! There are lots of ideas of “Bad People.” So, I’m gonna start off with a real blunt, basic one. Adolf Hitler. Actually, stuff went pretty bad for him. Let’s take an ambulence chasing, dishonest lawyer. Life looks great! 3 story house with a pool, fancy car, hot spouse. They got it made, right? Well, not realy, though. See, the stuff is just for show. In reality, the pool is a constant headache. The car costs too much to maintan, but still has to stay at speed limit, and that spouse is at least the second one. So even if that’s peachy, there’s Alimony and custody to worry about. Ecclesesiastes 12 tells us that all things eventually return to the dust, and all anyone can really do is honor God. And while you might never see it, there’s usually a breaking point. So, if you witness it, try to forget the image, and see the broken person in front of you. Because, no matter how things seem to be going, we all need help sometimes. Since we seem to have time for another example, let’s simplify. No big villian type, just somebody who cut you off at the Speed Mart, to get the parking spot you wanted. And let’s say they have tinted windows, and you see aligator boots. There’s a heavy jerk aura. And yeah, the spot you wanted was by the door, as you’re already exhausted. Now, I’m not gonna do like last time. They probably have issues, but don’t we all? Instead, what feels like a stolen blessing is probably one in disguise. By not parking by the door, your car didn’t get broken into. Or maybe, a telephone pole landed on their roof, but missed yours. Probably though? That choice messed them up in ways you’ll never see. Like, maybe they can’t afford the ticket they got, because cutting you off was caught on camera. Or some other discreet disaster that happened. My point is, things are often more in our favor than we think they are. People aren’t monsters, just people. And what looks unfair is usually just right. So, if you’re reading this on the digital device you access, let that be the first in the list of good stuff you enjoy. Try to focus on that. Oh My God
Even if you don't know the term hypostatic union, all Christians agree that Jesus is fully God, and fully man. Luke 23 gives many examples, but I've also researched more so you don't have to. And if that's interesting, let's get into it! Maybe the most obvious evidence is the way Jesus fulfills thousands of years of prophecy, going all the way back to Genesis, and through loads of symbolic forshadowing, like Jonah or David. Among those, though, He's the "Man of sorrows." Not just a title, Christ s human in His misery. When Lazurus died, Jesus wept. He was sympathetic with the woman at the well, and He felt the anguish of the mourning parents who sought His help. He took naps, and let John sleep on His lap, because He's a great guy. Who also happens to be God. Next would be His sovereign authority, manifesting in the way God designs and determines every event and situation. He does this by speaking forgiveness and power into human struggles. Such as, Lazarus,come forth! And ultimately, we see His true nature in the way Jesus is made to be perfect. On the flip side of that, everyone knows the passage from Matthew 21 with Christ's outrage in the temple. More common, though, He showed being tired of "You den of Vipers." Or "This sinful generation." Time after time, His frustration shows His humanity. But only God, through all that, remained sinless. Ultimate evidence of divinity is His provision for our salvation. The only historic recorded figure to live without sin, who freely laid down His life, as a debt fully paid for the sins of all nations, before rising again to extend invitation. Or, somewhat more simply, gave grace that's amazing. And He still gives that grace to this day. I hope that blessed you. Divine Face Time
During the COVID pandemic, everybody learned about Zoom. But of course, there's a lot of other video-chat services out there. Possibly one of the oldest apps being Face Time. It was named that because you could see the face of whoever you're talking to. And while today's more a meditation on prayer, I like that imagery. Because I've studied things so that you don't have to. It'll all make sense in a minute. But it's about to get interesting. So buckle up folks, and let's get into it! First off, I want to take a little time to explain the way we see God's face. A long time ago, people started using that word to mean character. Like, if two armies were in battle, and one surrenders, they "Lose face." Of course, no one actually lost a physical face, but they did fail. They lost what made them a threat, kind of what made them a legitimate army. Expanding off that, God doesn't and can't lose face. He's the same, yesterday, tommorrow, and today. In that way, we see His face every time we see the way He does things. A rainbow, a baby's toes, the way that a flower might tickle your nose. All works of creation. And all displays of His character, His grace, or, to apply the phrase, His face. He doesn't show that to just everyone. I mean, in a way He does. But in a phrase that Jesus repeats, "He who has eyes, let him see." Which is kind of pointing to how most of the world can't find the forest for the trees. It's so very present, it's hard to pick out just one thing. But to those who believe, He will sometimes allow this, as a sort of relief. More than that, though, and back to Face Time. I suppose you could call this Grace Time. But so often, when we're in despair, we can find His face, His character, by reaching out in prayer. Psalm 69, David cries "Save me, O God, for the waters have reached to my neck." Lots of modern songs have similar imagery, but only because God always does. Save, that is. Blood Covenant
When people read covenant in the Bible, they read “contract.” Except, they’re not the same at all. But a lot of people have forgotten that, or never learned it. Which makes sense, because the truth is scary. The thing is, it’s still the truth! And I’ve spent my life researching this stuff, which means you don’t have to. I just think it’s fascinating. Anyway. That's enough about me. Let’s get into it! First off, I’ll cover how covenants are different then contracts, and then I’ll show some examples as to why they matter. A contract just lays out basic rights. The word literally means *a written agreemet* Like, here’s what you get, and here’s what I get. They usually use some kind of law, and can often be disolved when either person isn’t happy. A covenant, on the other hand, is a much older idea, meaning a complete surrender of rights. This word literally means a giving or union of persons. You get everything I have, and I get everything you have. Like that John Legend song. And it’s more than legal. It’s spiritual, and forever. To explain this and defend it, some modern people use contracts. But that’s obviously not the only explaation. Because, as we'll see, covenants are so much much more. Back in the good old days, we used to seal covenants with blood. The Bible is but one source where we see a lot of this. Particularly seen in Leviticus. For other sources, look into Gilgamesh, or thralldom. Anyway, about the Bible. Right off the bat, we see Noah make one, and Abraham formed a couple. There's a lot in the Old Testament, But the Crucifiction was one. Every time, they killed sacrifcies. This wasn’t just because GOD likes barbeque. The animals killed were symbols of the humans, giving a life without commiting suicide. It means you (GOD) and I (Man) give ourelves each other forever. Just a couple more examples, really quick. This is why, in old marriages, the father of the bride would kill his fatted calf. Sure, for a party and feasting, but also to seal the covenant, binding the families forever. And since before anyone remembers, sacrifices were made when babies were dedicated. Now it’s usually a luncheon, but the child is bound to God forever. And even if people forgot what it means, we remember that it’s super important, at least on the surface. Lastly, like I teased at, this is why the crucifiction matters. Why Jesus is The Lamb of God. No amount of actual sheep would do. And GOD dosen’t appreciate human sacrifice. So He was here for a time, fully GOD and fully man. He entered into death just long enough to defeat it. Still being GOD, though, He rose again. And now, if we accept this final covenant, He gives himself to us, and we to Him. Forever. I hope that blessed you. Don't Call it a Come Back
The ressurection is the foundation of the Christian faith. Sure, there's other things we believe, but without that saving sacrifice, they're not so essential. In light of that, I've researched key facts about it, so you can explore too. And share what you've learned. So, if that sounds good to you, let's get right into it! Christ returning to life changes everything about life as we know it. I mean, before you knew the gospel, you couldn't know real hope. But afterward, not only is your life changed, you wanna change everyone else's. This is why those women who found out first ran to go tell everyone else. And why, when they understood, they went public with the good news. And frankly, it's why, if you're a believer, so should you. Honestly, all scriptures point to it, either forwards or backwards. Really, with A.D. and B.C, it's the defining moment in all history. Sure, since day one, people have tried to deny the ressurection. To disprove it, more recent forensic analysts such as Frank Lawrence have investegated. Only to walk away convinced, with a great witness. In light of those realities, the ressurection should be the key point of your testimony. It's the reason for all your joy, but more than that, telling anyone your story. That way, we can bring people in, and as God will, all can be redeemed. Because, like what Paul said in 1 Cor 15:20, we know that Christ rose from the dead. For as through Adam, all have death. But through Christ, all have life! And if we have such hope, it just makes sense to share it with family and friends. And everyone else named in The Great Commission. I hope that blessed you. Tiny Lights
Too much light is blinding. The same goes for too little. We need just enough to see the next step. For a long time, wisdom has been referred to as light, and it operates the same way. That's why I researched a few tiny lights, so you don't have to. Hopefully, they'll be a help. So if that sounds good, let's get into it! So, this might seem like shameless self promotion, but it's really not. Saint Augustine said something that I won't quote in full here, but the point was that he didn't dare ask to see more than the next step, the next move. Many other theologians believe that God doesn't show us His full plan, as that would be too much for us. With that in mind, we should instead try to find just enough "light," or, wisdom. Whether you like reading Augustine, John Piper, or me, look for something that you can consult, to help you believe. Now, that's just one light. Or, I guess, one place we need wisdom? But another is in relationships. Of course, they're not all romantic but because it's easy, I'll explain with those. Hollywood shows us dramatic gestures, leading to happy endings. But in reality, to quote a poet, love is more an ember than a blaze. A small, steady glow that gets you home. Biblical instances can be found in The Song of Solomon, or Jacob courting Rebecca. So, you might be detecting a theme here. These are all elements of wisdom. And they're not especially profound or dramatic. Still, they're no less signignificant. Which is why they need attention every day. And while it might be obvious, the next is prayer. Although, slightly less obvious might be why. You probably heard that The Spirit uses a still small voice. But sometimes, it's so small, you're not sure what you heard. But He's patient, and if we keep asking, the Father will faithfully guide us. Nothing was hidden that won't be revealed. (Luke 8:17) I hope that blessed you. Perils of Pride
Everybody struggles with pride. And while I won't get into original sin today, it's essentially misplaced confidence. Like how I'm so proud of all my humility! But in all seriousness, as our protector and provider, God hates that. No matter how innocently we might stumble into it. So I've studied various aspects of both realities, so you don't have to. And if you'll honor me with your reading for a bit, let's get into it! Our pride can make us feel secure, but it's a false security. We actually leave ourselves way more vulnerable, because when we don't quite grasp our own weakness, it then opens us up to danger, and that's why God disciplines people to prevent it. Because if noboy ever told you not to, you'd enjoy things like running in traffic. It not only makes us feel secure, but it convinces us that we're our own only hope. And whenever that happens, we don't respect the sovereignty of God, but more than that, we also ignore the needs of our neighbors. Which would lead us to a total collapse of society , whilst also resisting the one Being who actually sustains it. As obviously misguided as that sounds from afar, we can find ouselves doing that all the time. Ultimately, because it's baseless, all this misplaced confidence will be reckoned with. God is righteous, giving everyone exactly what they deserve.This is why He has promised to bring low the arrogant, and to likewise bless the meek. And with that in mind, I feel like the choice of options is easy. It might seem difficult at times. Just remember. He's promised you a helper in every need. Plus, He's overcome everything! Just so Chaotic
Yes, this is a mixed metaphor. But the thing is, all of creation glorifies God. Everything points to how He does His thing. So today, I'm gonna look at how games like D&D organize stuff, and how we can use that too. They call it "Attributes." And if you don't get that, don't stress! I'll break it down in a minute. 'Cause I did the research, so you won't have to. So, if you folks are ready to play, let's get into it! That word, attributes, is basically a way of organizing everything, ever. There's pretty much good, evil , and chaotic. Which we'll shelve for later. Being lawful good or evil means you're fully that thing, willful means you prefer one or the other, and different species impact it, like, Orcs are usually more evil. Neutral tries not to pick sides. The beauty of it is, we can totally apply this to reality! As in, God would be the ultimate lawful good dungeon master. Because, He works all things together for the good of those that love Him. Satan is a lawful evil, and we humans lean heavier to one side or the other, except when we try to be neutral. Angels are good, and Demons are evil. See? It works! And now, the thing you've been waiting for. See, chaotic stuff kinda has to be neutral. It could be an non playale character, like a dragon, but in reality, it more fits stuff like fire and floods. Dogs, for example, if you wanna get into it. Basically, it's stuff that doesn't try to be good or evil. What that means, though, is that people get out what we put in. If we respond with fear, dismay, and submission, then that fuels our reaction, and the thing results in our harm, as if evil. But if we respond with faith, hope, and courage, it'll work out for our good! Because He abides with those who abide with Him. And doing that might be easier, by remembering that organizing trick. The Daily Grind
ince the fall, humans have had to work. But did you ever think about the way work was part of the plan, even before that? Well, it totally was. And I've been researching that very fact, so that you don't have to. I warn you, though. Once you know this, it might change everything. So, if you're ready, just relax, and let's get into it! First off, there's more than one kind of work. Literally , servile and necessary. Such as firefighters and paramedics. (Jimmy Aiken)* In fact, Genisis 1:10 says how, "God rested from his work of creation. But if He wasn't doing some work running things, life would probably have stopped. Or descend into anarchy. Really, it's not worth thinking about. But spiraling off from that, we recall that mankind was made in His image. Now, that might mean that God has two eyes, two ears, etc. But far smarter people than myself, like C.S. Lewis have long understood that to mean, we think a lot like Him. Just like humans tend to think in the way that their parents raised them to, but on a much bigger scale. Other thinkers have also categorized types of work. For our purposes, there's three kinds. Basically, there's Servile work, and then there's essential work. That word is a clue; It's work done in service of another, usually for a paycheck. Essential work is needed, to keep our lifestyles. And this is where it gets a bit more interresting. Most Christians look at Luke 14:5, and say, it's okay to work on your sabbath if your desperate. And it is, and we're greatful to L.E.O's and hospital workers. But there's lot of work you don't get paid for. Like, mowing your own yard. But if you enjoy that, and it gives you peaceful time alone with God, go ahead and do that on Sundays! That's really a pure form of worship.(Cale Clark)** If not Sunday, whatever day is your sabbath. And while I'm sure there are loads of other examles, I'll let you think of them. And if you have concerns, pray about it. But manind was made for work, and work for mankind. Atheism Takes Faith
If you actually think about it, Atheism just doesn't make sense. It takes olympic level mental gymnastics to convince yourself that no god exists. You may already be noticing that I didn't capitalize the last pronoun. But they're that bad! Which is why I researched them, so you don't have to. But if you'd like to be amused and strengthened by this, let's get into it! I struggle with my belief in God. Just like the patriarchs and the disciples. But Atheim looks at everything, ever, and insists that random chance is responsible for all complexity. Fredrick Nietche said one time, "God is dead." But really , 1,000 years earlier, King David wrote that, "The fool says in his heart, there is no God." (Psalm14:1) Not only is randomness mathmatically impossible, the wonders of nature require an originator. On top of that, since time before memory, most people have credited some divine determination behind existence. Whether it's Vishnu, or Allah, or more correctly, Yaweh, the human heart longs to know who put it here. Because we all want porpoise. Or maybe, purpose? See, meaning is important. But aside from the odd outlier, only recently*has mankind denied all possibillity of intelligent design. Rejecting the tiniest idea that we're not supreme and sovereign. Plus, life is just too precious to be pointless. Now, you may dissagree, but just think. Before humans can talk, we resist death. If all we can do is cry, then folks, we raise a powerful ruckus.Still, we agree that things can be important. But if it's all just a mess of chaos, that couldn't be. Instead, God gave us the idea of purpose, and levels in that. He, of course, is of supreme importance. Which is why the devil's greatest trick was convimcing people that neither God nor Satan exist. Big Questions
Why am I here? What's the point? What does it all mean? Those are just a few of the questions that perplex and kinda bother all mankind. And a lot of folks resign themselves to never finding answers. But fortunately for you, I've been researching them for years! Which means, of course, that you may have to. And I found one source that answers all ofthem. Sounds too good to be true? Well, it's not. But hey, let's get into it! People have really always wanted to know, how'd we get here? Those with sense have always known, nothing exists without an originator. But the Bible* gives a name. Saying nothing exists without God. Another thing folks wonder is, "Do I even matter? What's my purpose?" But once again, Scripture** has the answer. Being made in His image, we don't just look like God. We behave like Him. We love like Him, caring for people like Him, as well as caring for His creation, this world. And while there's bound to be loads more, for today, I'll wrap up with "What even is truth?" Possibly the biggest philosophical question ever. Fortunately, the Word of God*** has us covered on that one too! He is the way and the truth. Which is fine, as Jesus saves. But it's less confusing than it sounds, as He's the way to the truth.
