What's Love Got to do With it?
Right now, the world is getting ready for valentine's day. Roses and chocolate and sappy music, everywhere. But I've been pointing out, it didn't start that way. Still, on the off chance you don't know how we got here, I've done the research so that you don't have to. It's actually fascinating stuff! If a little emotional. So, hold on to your heart, and let's get into it!
Way back in the days of the Roman Empire (C.F. Martology) He was a Christian Bishop in the court of Claudius II. While there are several legends of his ministry, two prevail.
The first says that, as Rome was largely pagan at this time, Valentinene was gracious and courageous by presiding over marriages between Christian couples in secret, risking everything, and eventually, being martyred.
The second says that Valentine was called to pray over a jailer's blind daughter. He restored her sight, shared the gospel, and she converted. Some say he also gave her an education, such as reading, writing, and arithmetic. For this reason they make a point of acknowedging teachers on his day. When this was reported to authority, Valentine was executed, for loving her enough to save her soul.
Either way you look at it, Valentine was a model of Christ's sacrificial love. Most commonly referred to today as Agape, instead of Eros. But True love all the same. And one we should live every day.
I hope that blessed you. If so, please consider buying me a cup of coffee, to keep me going.
