Talk About Weird...
I did something like this some time ago. But people liked it, and I'm fascinated by it. So I did even more research, which you don't have to. As you may know, I love breaking down words. I also enjoy discussing belief, especially beliefs about the divine plan, and why things happen. And today, if you stick around, we’ll get into all three. Just by unpacking one special word. But spelled a little different. And if that’s as interesting to you as it is to me, then let’s get into it!
Okay. You’ve been patient. So I’ll go ahead and fill you in. The word I’m talking about is “weird.” No, seriously! But before that, it was wyrd. And at first, it was wurd, from the early German. And while they all have slight changes, the meanings change greatly. But the older two are more interesting. Allow me to explain.
I’ll start by stating the obvious, but hang in there. It’s coming. Weird, as you may know, means strange, or otherworldly. But that’s a bit simplified from the olden days. Like I said, first, it was wurd. And she was one of the three Norns, German versions of the Greek Fates. And while I might talk about their personalities later, that’s why wyrd came to mean fate, or destiny.
And that’s where stuff gets interesting. First off, we’ve always felt like destiny was odd, or strange. But a long time ago, they got into fiddly bits. Nuance, if you prefer. While I won’t get into pagan personifications, the three sisters were basically past, present, and future, Wurd being future. A future that only shifts in how it happens, but what you’ll do is set. You wind up kinda stuck.
Until Christianity. We’re just different. But one of those ways is Free Will. There’s the perfect will of God (His best.) And the permissible will (the way He bends the results of our choices for our good.) Some things just had to happen, like the passover and the resurrection. But our God is so powerful that when we mess up, He bends heaven and earth so that “All things work…For the good of those that love Him.” Rom. 8:28 And while we shouldn't behave like we take it for granted that freedom isn’t weird. It’s wonderful.
I hope that blessed you. If so, please consider buying me a cup of coffee, to keep me going.
