Strange Series
Updated: Aug 6
People like a good show. Sometimes they watch the same one over and over. Sometimes, writers do that with stories . But other times, you want something different. Something a little strange, perhaps. But obviously, those aren't the norm. Not to worry! As ever, I researched some so that you don't have to. Today, I'm unpacking unusual but wholesome series. Don't turn that dial, and let's get into it!
1. Itch
Based on a series of books by the same name, this show is about a child prodigy, fascinated by chemistry. Or more specifically, the periodic table. The plot revolves around him solving a mystery by using his unique knowledge, and getting into sticky situations. Enjoyably odd, and you might even learn something. Available on BYUTV.
2. Primeval
This one is right up there, as far as weird goes. A college professor discovers an "Anomaly." The nature of which becoming it's own plot point eventually. But never mind that. What takes up most of the show is the way it links us to random spots in the Jurassic period, letting dinosaurs loose in modern London. Not to say anything about the way time travel complicates relationships, and politics, and more. Just a good watch,if you don't over think it. Available on iPlayer and Prime.
3. Overlord and the Andersons
Ever just had a day and thought, "There goes the neighborhood?" Well, that's every day for the Andersons. One day, a ship landed in the backyard. And they had a spare bedroom. So , the pilot, an alien overlord in exile, decides to move in. And things just go downhill from there. Available on BYUTV.
4. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
A classic curiosity, this show features a widowed writer and her children. Starting a new chapter, they move to a remote new England island and, struggling to find a place, settle in a dilapidated mansion. It's drafty and the floor creeks, but that's nothing compared to the original tenant. An 18th century sea Captain built the place, and still lives there. Or maybe, un-deads there? But as time goes by, both the ghost and Mrs. Muir teach each other things. Along for the ride are her housekeeper, landlord, and a cast of colorful characters. This one is well worth watching. Available on Apple T.V, Amazon Prime, and more.
5. Bernd das Brot
Strap in folks, because I saved the best for last. Burnt is a type of bread. Also, Bernd is a name, like Bernard. And this guy is both. Entirely in German, but with subtitles, this show features him and his roommates (A stock of broccoli, and a sheep-goat-thing.) And the misadventures they have in suburbia. This one's actually suitable for all ages. Available on YouTube.
