Non-Food Fasting

3 min read

This article might not be for everyone. But Acts 13 talks about how the apostles (Church Leaders) got closer to God with prayer and fasting. And sure, while there's all kinds of medical reasons why people need to eat, the choice to surrender stuff to Him isn't just about not eating. I'll dig into that more tomorow. But for today, I've researched some non-food fasting you can do, so you don't have to. Because God doesn't create blessings meant to harm people, we just have to approach carefully. So if that sounds like fun, let's get into it!

1.Caffiene

Like I said, I hope to explore this more tomorrow, but the point of our fasting is to make God our main focus. And being the least regulated addictive substance, caffiene can be very distracting. For me, it's one of those situations where I tend to care more about the gift than the giver. And while coffee is a good place to start, addicts can still get their fix from tea, or energy drinks, or even just a well-calculated soda. And when you're focused on scatching that itch, you might not see Him. But if you get enough sleep, and just carve out all caffiene, He'll give you all you need.

2.Internet

I probably oughtta clarify, I mean frivolous online screentime. But man, that's quite the moutfull! Still, you know exactly what I'm talking about. If you don't, good for you. But most folks today struggle with what the kids call "Doom Scrolling." Just staring at your device for any lenth of time, mindlessly scrolling through the endless stream of images. Or maybe you just kill time with back episodes of late night back episodes of Adult cartoons. Whatever it might be, we all tend to waste time in cyberspace, myself included. But sometimes, it can be healthy to say that you'll choose not to, outside of responsibilities like work for your occupation, or for your ministry (vocation.) Once again, the idea here is to put God first.

3.Secular Music

God created music, for His glory and our good. But like everything else twisted, our adversary has warped much of it, to take center stage, and distract us with worldly stuff. Now, this fast might be super difficult for people who have to live in the world, sharing a workspace, for instance. If that's you, my sympathies. But hopefully, you'll find something else that works. Still, if you can, you may find that it's super healthy to listen all the time to music which praises our heavenly Father. In fact, there's so much out there, it might just become your new normal.

4.Television

I know, these days people don't have to flick through numbered channels on analog picture sets anymore. It's all streaming this and digital that. But it's still shows, still entertainment. That nobody really needs. And again, if this one isn't for you, you don't have to give up all the things. But maybe, you'd be better off reading that book you'd always wanted to finish. Or spending time with the people in your life. Even just entering into prayer. That's a great way to put God first.

5.Sugar

Yes, I said non-food fasting. But this is really more a condiment. Unless you wanna go with junk food, which would include salt, but still. Those are more snacks. The idea isn't to starve yourself (Again, blessngs don't harm.) But snacking could be an idol, if you give it your attention, your interest, or power over your joy. If that sounds like you, maybe this is something you should step away from, to remember where your joy actually comes from. As well as every other good thing!

I hope that blessed you. If so, please consider buying me a cup of coffee, to keep me going.
