Get Used to Different
Okay, so, this is a line from The Chosen. But they use it because it's a common theme in the writing of Luke and later Paul. Because, it really was a big deal for Jesus. I was inspired to write this from a sermon I heard recently, leading me to do some research, which means you don't have to. So let's simmer down to brass tacks, and get into it!
In Luke 3, John the Baptist is seen preaching baptism to mark repentance. While the jews had long taught ritual baptism, this signified a total change of heart. Christ opening His ministry showed a big change.
He furthered this by making clear how His presence made old observances into distractions. Later, it was compared to sewing new fabric into an old tear.
Several times, He argued about the letter of the sabbath law straying from the spirit. They made tradition more important than salvation.
We forget sometimes, but law and tradition aren't evil. God invented them, and every church has some. Once in a while, we fight and kill over them. But the whole point is that it's super important to stay focused on serving and building the Kingdom of God.
It's so important, He came here in person to explain how legalism is bad. And while God couldn't stay (This work thing came up.) He left an entire manual, spanning thousands of years to remind us. Plus, people like me to point it out. So, again? Love God, love your neighbor. It's that simple.
I hope that blessed you. If so, please consider buying a subscription.
