Food For Fasting
When people today think of fasting, they imagine the medical sense, which is just not eating, like, anything. But fasting for spiritual reasons, as I've been talking about, isn't just not eating. Rather, it's stepping away for a time from things that get in the way of your faith or obedience. And while that doesn't always mean food, in the olden days, people would choose to not eat the luxury that is meat, preffering humble things. And while I'm not sharing a recipe today, I have researched several plant-based options, so you don't have to. These are all tasty, but before I make myself hungry, let's get into it!
1.Polenta
While a fantastic menu option, it's important to remember that this is only a starter, and you will probably want sides. I suggest a salad, but include lentils to make a complete protien. Polenta is cornmeal, packed into a loaf pan, and then it's sliced and fried before being served with a sauce. Tampenade, chutney, or even marinara. I like to pair this with peppermint tea, or Kombucha.
2.Shepherd's Pie
Now, while this is traditionally served with ground beef and mixed vegetables as filling, this version just leaves out the beef. It's still a lovely meal, but you may want to add cheese (Again, for the protien.) Without giving you exact measurements, it's essentially a heavy layer of mashed potatoes, in a baking dish, over a thick layer of mixed vegetables. You could add cheese, or cream sauce, or both. As I just feel like tea with these, I'd pair this with black pekoe or earl grey.
3.Pyttippanna
This one could be a full meal, unless you think it's too carb heavy. In which case, it's perfecty happy as a main course. Coming from Switzerlnd, it's a melange of tubers, sliced up and sauteedwith mushrooms. A common trend is a fried egg with that. By "That," I mean, yams, carrots, fennel, and parsnips. All of them making the others taste better. I'd pair this one with a strong tisane, or constant comment.
4.Tabouli
A personal favorite, this one can play as a side salad or a full meal, depending on how you feel. It comes from the Medditeranian (Think Turkey.) Where it's surprisingly affordable to assemble. Esentially, it's a salad made of herbs like pepperint and basil, served over bulgar (Cracked Wheat) and drizzled with lemon juice. Another example where the product is more than the sum of it's parts. I'd pair it with hibiscus tea, or peppermint again.
5.Dutch Pancakes
This one's a bit of a guilty pleasure. It's totally a meal, but it feels like dessert, or breakfast. Kind of huge, as pancakes go, this egg heavy mixture also has flour and whole milk, and is poured into a large skillet. There, it's heated just long ebough to cook the eggs, before being sliced into large wedges and served. Top it with whatever you put on pancakes, and pair it with chai or chammomile.
I hope that blessed you. If so, please consider buying me a cup of coffee, to keep me going.
