Evangelical Electronica
Real quick: There are 5 of these, I just couldn't work that into a catchy title. But Jesus talked about even rocks crying out. And since computers are (basically) made of rocks, this is pretty much that. It's also not sponsored. I just researched good stuff so you don't have to. So, set up your turntables, or whatever kids do these days, and let's
get into it!
1. Broods
Hailing from New Zealand, this brother-sister duo has been a powerhouse since 2010. They focus on Georgia's intense vocals, while Caleb spearheads much of the musical accompanyment. While fairly discreet about specific beliefs, their background performing in church still fills their music with sound, constructive ideas, if at times they appear to be under development. Still, the driving beats and rousing vocals around such inspiring themes makes their collection a great soundtrack. A personal favorite is Recovery, and you can find their music on R.C.A. Records and Warner Music.
2. Svrcina
It's actually pronounced (sur-SEEN-A) and it's her last name. Coming out of L.A, her goal s to create music that's "Artisic, honest, and healing." Having also grown up performing in church, she is more comfortable with how faith anchors her, and defines her recordings. While Themes seem heavy on relationships, she also focuses on an eternal figure, who always supports and protects her. The style could best be descrbed as dream-like, while some tracks are more haunting than others. A personal favorite is You Hold Me Close, and you can find her music on Tone Tree Music.
3. San Holo
Agan, not expressly Christian (Though, oddly enough, he's collaborated with Broods.) This musician from the Netherlands blends so well with them, because he too is seeking and getting very close. He says that music is better than words at expressing universal, ultimate truth. But the truth he so often arrives at is, since we all need the same thing, love your neighbor like yourself. His music often starts slow and builds, but occasionally, just carries a driving rythm throughout. Regardless, it's all very mindful. A personal favorite is Honest, and you can find his music on Columbia Records, Spinnin' Records, and various other labels.
4. Young Oceans
Alternating between 10 and 12 members, this band usually headlines two artists, and always showcases Eric Marshall. The guiding light has always been that he won't record anything he doesn't truly believe, and that he can't just "Lay on the floor and listen to." Which while very grounded in faith, initially felt like another major worship group,]. But over time has become something deeper, something different. They have a unique sound, at times instrumental or just charged, but always focused on what scripture calls heavenly places. I love to play their stuff on low before spending time in prayer, thouh it's also good, say, during housework. It helps me focus. A personal favorite is If. You and you can find their music on Street Talk Media.
5. Rivers and Robots
An "indie worship group from Manchester, U.K," they're very popular with the American Evangelical crowd. Featuring many core beliefs as song titles, most of their music centers around sheer wonder at the glory of God. Some tracks also explore not knowing Him, but they always circle back to that moment of discovery, and the celebration that brings. Sometimes slow and thoughtful, they're usually filled with joyful noise. Really good stuff for road trips. A personal favorite is Fountains, and you can find their music on Set Sail Reords and Integrity Music.
I hope that blessed you. If so, please consider buying me a cup of coffee, to keep me going.
