Different Days
So, everyone is going on kind of this annual romantic craze. But while I love love, I'm currently single. As are, no doubt, several others. And even if you're married with kids, (The goal of romance.) you might not want your four year old running around shirtless with a rose in his teeth. Lucky for you, there are a whole bunch of less romantic options to observe on this holiday! And don't panic, because I've researched them so you don't have to. There's something for everyone! So relax, put on your comfy pants, and let's get into it!
Galentines Day
Very much what it sounds like. Originally an episode from a sit-com, where a lady wants to bond with friends, it has become a time to build healthy relationships, empower women, and just have fun. No matter your status. Activities can run the gamut, with the most important thing being fun, followed by friendship. So instead of being depressed about stuff, it's a way to still enjoy your day.
Palentines Day
A fairly obvious follow-up. Because guys heard about the last one, and wanted to have fun too! This one isn't just for guys or gals, and again, your status doesn't really matter here. Once again, it's a chance to step away from big industry's emotional blackmail, and just enjoy a day with friends. You can exchange gifts or cards, fix dinner, go kayaking or bird watching. Just don't make it wierd, and have fun!
White Day
So, this started in Japan. And while red in Asia means joy and good luck, white commonly means death and sadness. But in the mid-20th century, a bunch of high school students decided to own it! They were single, and wearing white, but it became a sign of strength, for that day. Typically the 15th of February (But you can do earlier.) they would dress up, buy each other chocolates that were now on sale, and celebrate that, while they were all single, they still weren't alone. And recently, the trend has moved west.
Lunar New Year
Often called Chinese New Year, it's really just a different calendar, used by a lot of the world. And in 2026, it's happening on what America calls February 14th. Other years, it might move around, but as long as you know your lunar calendar, you could always celebrate in honor of this instead of what everyone else and their nephews are doing. Aside from eating special meals, and setting off fireworks, this one doesn't require much to observe. As usual, just have fun.
Optional Feast Day
The Vatican says the 14th is for Cyril and Methodus, which most people don't observe anyway. But if you want, you can instead observe the real Saint Valentine. Who, in adition to being a celibate Bishop, never asked anyone out to coffee, and never had a good cry over a pint of ice cream. He did, however, dedicate his life to loving the world the way Christ did. So, do that at least one day a year. And hey, maybe do that every day!
I hope that blessed you. If so, please consider buying me a cup of coffee, to keep me going.
