Cross Purposes
May people have used and heard this analogy: The vertical beam of the cross represents the depth of sin, and the horizontal arm is the bridge Christ made. Which is kind of nice. But what did the cross really mean, scientifically, symbolically, and spiritually? Great question, camper! It just happens, I've done some research so you don't have to. Which means, the info. doesn't have to stay buried. (Ressurection humor.) So, if you're curious, let's get into it!
First off, scientifically, it was a very, very painful death. But If you'll bear with me, I'll explain. The Romans were good at killing people. Maybe not the most, since technology kees improving. But when you're so practiced, you get creative. They had methods that were painless. They might have had some that were kind of painful. But without digging into all the nasty bits, historians are pretty sure that death on the cross was the most painful. Which is why we still say, "Excruciating" to describe stuff, since getting crucified (On a cross.) Was terrible.
Next, the symbolic. It's actually a nice transition. See, going back to Abraham (Genisis 15:7) The nation that beame Israel had a tradition of sealing a covenant with a blood sacrifice. For more, read my articles Come Down to the River, or Bless Your Heart. Later, in Exodus, Moses explains how God approved the slaughter of lambs, who represented sinful people. Their death meant people could live, and be forgiven, for a while. And Jesus, being God died to forgive us forever. And the covenant of His blood means we're not just made righteous, but we get to rejoice with Him forever too.
And that feeds into the spiritual aspects. You remember how, earlier, I said that God approved those sacrifices as ways to interact with Him? Well, even way back at the beginning, He knew sheep, goats, and doves would never be enough. So, He promised salvation to Eve, and a long time (But right on time.) later, He came to earth in flesh and blood, in a way that His death and ressurection would be the final sacrifice needed for our redemption. And if we but accept that, it's the first step to eternity in Heaven.
I hope that blessed you. If so, please consider buying me a cup of coffee, to keep me going.
