Come on Over!
So, I'm not particularly social. And I'm probably not the only person like that. But it has it's perks to being with other folks. In fact, believe it or not, hospitality is commanded in the Bible!* Still, it's important to remember: Christian hospitality is different than Social entertaining. I'll explain later, since I did some research, so that y'all don't have to. Now, with that, make yorself at home, and let's get into it!
We're told to enrich saints, and give hospitality to strangers.** Now, that takes caution, 'cause there are "Wolves in sheep's clothing," but then, many have entertined angels and didn't know it. For that, you should pray for guidance. Also as Proverbs says, "Above all else, guard your heart." (4:23) We also often have responsibilities, and must guard things like our families.
So, the difference between hospitality and entertaining. Scripture talks of Aquila, Priscilla,*** and others who ministered hospitality. But this was more offering food, a roof, and a bed to people from the church in need. Entertaining is dressing up, getting your hair did, and throwing stylish brunches or dinner parties. And if you do that, your fancy friends are expected to do that for you, often fancier, so as to one up you. Christian hospitality, you may be called on if there's a need, but then, maybe not. It's more about survival than performance.
Going back to the start,* we are told to be hospitable without complaining. Now, that doesn't mean we have to like it, or be good at it. What it does mean is that if, say, your sister's house burned down, and her husband and kids and all needed a place to stay, you shouldn't reply with a drawn out sigh followed by, "Well, yeah. I guess. But just for the weekend!" Freely you've been given, so freely give. It's just a better way to live.
Hebrews says to welcome strangers, because they might be angels. And yeah, for Abraham, they were actually God, in three persons. But that's super rare. More commonly, I've known Christians who were abused because they entertained vagrants. Either could happen, but deep speaks to deep. We've put up Mennonites and missionaries, and sometimes just a kind word or glance is all people need. But don't be afraid to point towards Salvation Army or Catholic charities, rather than stepping into harm's way. And if in doubt, ask the Holy Spirit in prayer. Whatever happens, He'll give you all you need.
