Come Down to the River
When I first wrote this piece, it was just an idea. But more recenlty, baptism has been the focus of several studies and conversations. It just so happens, I aready took on some research, so you don't have to. Jews, Christians, Muslims and more have some kind of water baptism. It's fascinating. So, with that, on your marks. Get set. And let’s get into it!
So, for that first question. Our word Baptize originally comes from the Greek Baptiein, which means to dip, or plunge, leading to a meaning of ceremonial immersion. This was probably connected by John the Baptist with the Jewish Mikveh, immersion for cleansing, before weddings and Sabbaths and things. John aligned it with repentance, and prophesied a more powerful form after him.
As to what it symbolizes. We just explained, it means immersion. Going under. Losing yourself, and surredering control. As we’ve seen, most everyone who believes anything says that’s part of it. But I’m holding to Christianity, because we have a unique understanding of forgiveness and grace. On that note, Christian baptism does three things.
First, by repenting, it washes sins away in every possible sense. Second, by being dunked, we literally give up control, symbolizing more surrender to come. And thirdly, while a one time act, it should commit every future act to God’s plan, not our own. That’s why, while some use rather little water, the meaning is the same, because the emotions are the same. And why baptism for the dead, while touching, denies the free will of the deceased.
So, wrapping things up. Baptism, as we understand it, is a sign passd down since before recorded ages. Under the newest covenant, it means total immersion into the Spirit of God. Which only takes water because that’s what He said. But if we truly believe and obey, there’s nothing about how much, or when. But it does have to be an informed choice, freely made. Still, it means we’re cleansed, we belong, and sometimes, we’re empowered. All in all, it’s pretty sweet!
