A Collection of Classics
Guess what? I got another list for y'all, fired up and ready. But this time, it's a whole mess of entertainment, aged to perfection. So you probably never heard of these. But don't worry. I did all the research, so you don't have to. So prepare your favorite comfy chair, and let's get into it!
1. Hazel
While most people don't hire help anymore, This show is still super relateable. It tells the life and times of Hazel Burke, a live-in maid for the Baxter family, as she has endearing misadventures. But the heart of the show (and several jokes) come from Hazel's spuky spirit and out-of-the-box problem solving skills. Frankly, we could all use a bit of that. Available through Sony Pictures and T.V. Land.
2. Sgt. Bilko (The Phil Silvers Show)
Phil Silvers played many characters in his time, and really had a bit of a sketch comedy. But probably his best known, and most enduring, is St. Ernest Bilko, of Fort Baxter. A backwater posting, the show recounts how much work Bilko goes to, to avoid doing his job. While his troops are often glad to help, these hijinks always have unpredictable, hilarious results. You can find it on Shout! factory and Mediumrare Entertainment.
3. The Carnation Comedy Hour
Probably one of the better-known titles, this one also goes by The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show. George, being a master storyteller, would open each episode with a monologue, about the darndest things that just happened. But his intro would always feed into some misadveture, made more complicated by his loving and well-meaning wife, Gracie. There'd be guest stars, and problems would often be solved with evaporated milk. Ah, the good old days! Available on Sony Entertainment and Amazon Prime.
4. Car 54, Where Are You?
The show follows days on the job for Gunther Toody, badge #1432, and Francis Muldoon, badge #7238. A rare slice of life for the day, it's still a unique snapshot into the lives of the guys who keep our world turning. Without fail, they stumble into unsolved cases, and by a sheer combination of pluck and luck, end up saving the day! A great feel-good watch. You can find it on Republic Pictures or Orion Entertainment.
5. The Dick Van Dyke Show
Though not as spry and slapstick as he once was, Dick still works hard, making 'em laugh, 60 years later. But for his self named program, he actually portrayed mild mannered Rob Petry. A vetereran performer from W.W.II, Rob lives in upstate New York, writing for Alan Brady. The show is an amusing take on struggles we all face, showing for five seasons that things are never as bad as all that, and we can always laugh. Available on Tubi, Pluto, and Plex.
I hope that blessed you. If so, please consider buying me a cup of coffee, to keep me going.
